How to Capture an Affected Area in magicplan

You can capture unique 'affected areas' on both floors and walls in magicplan to highlight specific zones, calculate square footage, and add extra detail to your projects. Once created, these areas can be moved like standard objects and can be customized to any shape you need.

What Is an Affected Area?

Affected Areas are user-defined, customizable shapes added to a room or wall. They are useful for mapping areas of damage within a room, such as water damage, fire, or mold. They can also be used to mark out specific zones within a space, like a carpeted section or backsplash area. Each shape is measured automatically once created, and shown in your chosen measurement units.

How to Add an Affected Area to a Room

  1. Open your project. From the Project Dashboard, navigate to the floor level you need.
  2. Tap to select the room to which you’d like to add an affected area, then access the details menu by tapping the “i” icon in the upper right on a tablet, or by swiping up from the bottom of your screen on a mobile phone.
  3. Find the "Affected Area" field and tap "Add New Area."
  4. The entire floor will appear pre-selected. Edit your area one of three ways:
    1. Drag the corners to reshape the area. Tap an edge to add a new corner and refine the shape.
    2. Use the measure picker. Tap to select one of the blue measurements along the edge of the shape to add the dimension.
    3. Use PrecisionLink. Tap to select a blue measurement to add a dimension with a Bluetooth laser measurer or digital tape measure.
  5. When finished, tap "Done."

ℹ️ Note: You can change the shape of the affected area at any time after you've created it.

  • Access the Details menu for the room where you've added the Affected Area shape, select the name of the area you which to edit, and adjust the corners.
  • Tap the shape you created and adjust the corners to change the shape.

How to Add an Affected Area to a Wall

  1. Open your project. From the Project Dashboard, navigate to the floor level you need.
  2. Tap to select the appropriate room, then tap the wall to which you’d like to add an affected area.
  3. Access the details menu by tapping the “i” icon in the upper right on a tablet, or by swiping up from the bottom of your screen on a mobile phone.
  4. Find the "Affected Area" field and tap "Add New Area."
  5. Customize the shape directly in the Elevation View. When you return to the 2D floor plan view, your affected area will display as a thin bar positioned on the wall.
  6. To see the full wall shape, simply tap the viewfinder at the bottom of your screen and select “Elevation View.”
  7. In the wall’s details menu, toggle "Show elevation in PDF" if you want this wall’s features included in your report.

ℹ️ Note: Affected areas created on walls cannot be moved to floors, and vice versa. Affected areas can only be moved on the original surface to which you've added them.

Customizing an Affected Area

Each affected area can be tailored to your needs:

  • Name: Assign a descriptive label.
  • Fill Color: Choose a color to visually distinguish the area.
  • Area Calculation: Automatically displayed.
  • Settings:
    • Show dimensions
    • Show label (each area gets a unique numbered label for clarity, which can be edited if desired)

ℹ️ Note: If multiple affected areas are added to the same room, each one will include a sub-label to indicate whether it's located in the room or on a wall.

Working with Affected Areas

  • Affected areas behave like standard objects and can be moved or adjusted.
    • It is not possible to move an affected area from a wall to the main room, nor can you move an area from a room to a wall.
  • You can attach photos, 360 images, videos, notes, and forms to any affected area.
  • Calculated area measurements for affected areas will be included in your Report PDF. Details for the area you’ve created will appear with a yellow number icon as other photos and notes do.
  • Calculated area measurements for affected areas will also appear at the bottom of Statistics Reports, and are available for export in your API data if needed.
  • If needed, affected areas can also be selected in the Estimator to make calculations based on the area measurements.
